For a long time, Urban Meyer was the best coach in the B1G. It was a consensus thought and there really wasn’t anyone close to challenging him for the top spot.

But with Meyer stepping away, there is some discussion as to which head coach now takes the top spot in the conference. There are a handful of guys you could make the argument for heading into the 2019 season.

CBS Sports recently released its latest rankings of all 14 B1G head coaches. Here’s how they have them ranked ahead of the 2019 campaign:

  1. James Franklin, Penn State
  2. Mark Dantonio, Michigan State
  3. Jim Harbaugh, Michigan
  4. Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern
  5. Kirk Ferentz, Iowa
  6. Paul Chryst, Wisconsin
  7. Scott Frost, Nebraska
  8. Jeff Brohm, Purdue
  9. P.J. Fleck, Minnesota
  10. Ryan Day, Ohio State
  11. Lovie Smith, Illinois
  12. Tom Allen, Indiana
  13. Mike Locksley, Maryland
  14. Chris Ash, Rutgers

You could probably make a case for any of the coaches listed in the top six, especially since five have won at least a division title. Harbaugh — who has won 38 games in four years — is the only one who hasn’t cleared that hurdle yet.

CBS Sports also listed its justification for placing each head coach in his respective spot. You can check out the reasoning behind the rankings here.
