According to Fort Wayne NBC, one of the best playmakers in the history of Indiana football is dead.

A body was discovered in the Maumee River on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Allen County Coroner’s Office identified the body as former Indiana star James Hardy on Thursday.

It’s unknown what the cause of death was. Hardy was 31.

By the time Hardy left Indiana after his junior season, he was the program’s all-time leader in receiving touchdowns (36), receiving yards (2,690) and receptions (186). He led the B1G in receiving in 2006 and 2007.

The Fort Wayne, Ind. native also played on the Indiana basketball team for two seasons.

The first-team All-B1G selection was selected No. 41 overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2008 NFL draft. He spent two years in Buffalo, where he caught just 10 passes.

Hamstring problems prevented him from getting his career off the ground with the Baltimore Ravens, and he was out of the NFL by the start of the 2011 season.

In 2014, Hardy was arrested on felony charges after attacking three police officers during a disturbance at his residence in Los Angeles.

Hardy will always be remembered by Indiana fans as one of the key pieces of the 2007 team that earned a bowl berth in the aftermath of Terry Hoeppner’s death.
