And then there were four.

Minnesota’s deep quarterback battle lost one of its five members on Tuesday. P.J. Fleck announced that Neil McLaurin, who came to the program as a JUCO at the end of 2016, will seek a transfer.

McLaurin transferred to Minnesota from Southwest Mississippi Community College a few months ago. Originally, McLaurin committed to the previous coaching staff.

At Southwest Mississippi, McLaurin completed 85 passes for 964 yards and eight touchdowns and ran for 440 yards and six touchdowns on 80 carries. He was the No. 1 dual-threat JUCO quarterback in the country, according to ESPN.

New offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca typically works with pocket passers, though he hasn’t said he’ll rule out a dual-threat option as the team’s starter.

With McLaurin out of the quarterback battle, Conor Rhoda, Demry Croft, Seth Green and true freshman Tanner Morgan will have a crack at winning the starting job.

They can better their cases at Minnesota’s spring game on Saturday.
