Clayton Thorson started every game in his career at Northwestern and left Evanston as the program’s all-time winningest quarterback. Now, he’s an NFL Draft pick.

Saturday afternoon, Thorson was taken in the fifth round by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 167th pick. He’s the second Wildcats quarterback selected in the College Football Playoff era, joining Trevor Siemian, a seventh-round pick in 2015.

Thorson started in all 53 career games at Northwestern, leading the Wildcats to a bowl game all four years in Evanston. Last season, he guided his team to a B1G West title and a trip to the conference championship game.

In his career, Thorson owned a 36-17 record as a starter. He threw for 10,731 yards and 61 touchdowns, while rushing for an additional 27 scores. Thorson left Northwestern as one of the most decorated quarterbacks in program history.

The major knock on Thorson was his completion percentage, which hovered around 60 percent most of his career. However, his accuracy improved every year he was under center, and reached its peak in 2018 with a 61.1 percent mark.

Thorson likely won’t step into a starting role right away, but could be a solid backup for a few years before getting a shot to be the No. 1 guy for a franchise.
