Last year, Urban Meyer made a public push to get 100,000 fans at Ohio State’s spring game. The Buckeyes ended up with a record 100,189 people at their annual spring scrimmage.

But in 2017, Ohio State will not come anywhere near the record-setting spring game attendance mark it set in 2016.

That won’t be from a lack of interest, though. The Buckeyes’ spring game attendance on Saturday will be down because of Ohio Stadium renovations to the East C-Deck.

Ohio Stadium’s capacity will only be 84,000.

The renovations will, however, be finished by the start of the 2017 season.

If Ohio State had 84,000 fans, it would still be more than any 2017 spring game so far. In fact, only Ohio State and Georgia exceeded the 84,000 mark in 2016.

Perhaps Penn State, which had 65,000 fans at last year’s spring game, will best Ohio State for the top spot on the heels of a B1G Championship and Rose Bowl berth. Nebraska also sold over 65,000 tickets already for its spring game on Saturday.

Whatever number Ohio State ends up with, there might have to be an asterisk on the spring game attendance leaderboard.

Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.
