Ryan Day couldn’t keep it secret forever. At some point, the new head coach would have to name Ohio State’s starting quarterback. Now, we have a specific date.

While meeting with the media on Wednesday, Day told reporters that he will make a decision and announcement on the starting quarterback situation on Monday. It will be a little less than two weeks until the Buckeyes battle Florida Atlantic in the season opener.

Day has played the quarterback situation close to the vest, but it sounds like Justin Fields as likely secured his spot as the No. 1 guy. The former UGA gunslinger earned some praise from his head coach on Wednesday, as well.

“Justin is practicing at a high level now,” Day said, according to Bill Rabinowitz of the Columbus Dispatch. “I feel good [about the quarterback situation]. I feel better than I did at this point last week.”

Fields and Kentucky transfer Gunnar Hoak have been battling for the starting job in Columbus. Everyone assumed Fields would walk in and be handed the job, but Day hasn’t been too pleased with the overall performance with either guy through the early stages of camp.

Things sound like they’re getting a little better at the position, making Day’s decision a little easier. I guess we’ll find out in a few days.
