The night Ezekiel Elliott was drafted, he should’ve gotten his wakeup call.

After the former Ohio State star was selected No. 4 overall by the Dallas Cowboys, he did something not uncommon. A woman took a selfie with a shirtless Elliott while he was in bed sleeping. It was posted on Snapchat and before long, it was all over the internet.

Athletes mocked Elliott for making the “amateur move” of sleeping over at a woman’s apartment. Regardless of your beliefs of what it looked like Elliott did, it should’ve sent a clear message to the rookie.

“Wow, I better be a little more careful.”

Since that photo went viral — a little less than 11 months ago — here are some of the things Elliott made off-the-field headlines for:

  • Ex-girlfriend claims Elliott assaulted her multiple times
  • Elliott tours Seattle weed shop before first preseason game
  • Elliott’s best friend is arrested for bringing loaded gun to bar while they were out in Columbus
  • Elliott pulls down woman’s shirt and exposes her breast at St. Patrick’s Day party

That last one — Elliott pulled a woman’s shirt down — happened over the weekend.  There’s clear video of him committing what could be considered sexual assault. That’s a punishable offense.

In case he forgot, the NFL is still investigating him for domestic violence claims made by his ex-girlfriend. It doesn’t matter that criminal charges were dropped. He could still face a fine and suspension for that, too.

Yes, he was an All-Pro tailback in his first NFL season. But Elliott is still making big-time rookie mistakes.

Nobody is saying Elliott needs to be tucked in by 9:30 with a glass of milk. If Elliott wants to take his shirt off at every club from Dallas to Vegas, that’s his right. That’s what some 21-year-olds like to do, especially ones that work as hard as Elliott does.

But do not, however, chalk up Elliott’s behavior to “boys being boys.” And if you’re wondering why Rob Gronkowski isn’t facing the same kind of criticism as Elliott, it’s because he isn’t currently under investigation by the NFL for allegedly assaulting a woman multiple times.

Since he was drafted, Elliott has made one poor, adult decision after another. Elliott just finished his rookie season and already, he’s been linked to incidents that involve women, violence and drugs. That’s not good.

Some people might dismiss Elliott’s off-the-field behavior for a couple different reasons. For starters, all of his headlines seem to be generated from someone with a camera phone. Whether it’s on Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter or whatever, Elliott seems to be a popular subject of cell phone photos and videos.

Others might chalk up Elliott’s negative headlines to him getting superstar scrutiny in a high-profile market.

“All they talk about are the Cowboys, the Yankees and the Lakers. Would anybody care about this if he was playing in Buffalo?”

There’s some truth to that. And yes, it looks different when Elliott’s off-the-field actions are being captured by a cell phone as opposed to something he says or does at a postgame press conference.

But this is Elliott’s reality in the technology era. It doesn’t matter if Michael Irvin got away with this or Emmitt Smith did that. Elliott won’t be able to get away with anything as long as he’s wearing the star on his jersey. That’s what he signed up for.

No matter how many touchdowns he scores or how many guys he hurdles over, Elliott is not above the law. This latest incident makes one question if Elliott understands that yet.

A second video surfaced that showed Elliott actually attempted to pull the woman’s top down another time. The second time, however, she was able to fight his hand off and prevent him from exposing her breast without her permission again. It doesn’t matter if the woman still exposed her breasts or that she and Elliott “hung out later.”

Guys, picture what would happen if you did that to your girlfriend or wife in public. You’d get a whole lot more than the slap on the wrist that woman gave Elliott.

If Elliott continues on this path, he’ll be looking at much more than a slap on the wrist from the NFL.
