Garrett Sickels won’t just be trying to improve his draft stock when he attends the NFL Scouting Combine later this month. No, the former Penn State defensive end will have something else on his mind, as well.

Sickels plans to use this opportunity as a chance to raise money for rare disease research. He plans to use his performance on the bench press as the source for donations.

A few days after Penn State’s Rose Bowl appearance, Sickels announced he would forego his senior season and declare for the NFL draft. He was then invited to attend the combine, along with teammate Chris Godwin.

The campaign is Reps for Research and is run through PledgeIt. Fans can pledge to donate a specific dollar amount for every rep that Sickels completes on the bench press. You can get more information on the campaign here.

On his PledgeIt page, Sickels says:

I was honored to be an Uplifting Athletes Letterman and part of the leadership team for the Penn State Chapter. I participated in Lift for Life every summer that I was on campus. This was a very important part of my PSU life and experience, and that is why I’ve chosen to launch my Reps for Research campaign for Uplifting Athletes in support of the rare disease community.

Sickels finished his career at Penn State with 94 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and 11 sacks. He led the Nittany Lions with 12.5 stops for loss in 2016.

The record for bench press reps at the combine is 51 and only 18 players have exceeded 40 reps since 1998. Sickels will probably be pushing hard to join that list for multiple reasons.
