Valai was a former safety at Wisconsin and was coached by Ash in 2010 in Madison. At the time, Ash was the defensive backs coach for the Badgers.
Rutgers was looking for a new cornerbacks coach after Henry Baker, who departed for a role with the New York Giants. Baker had been hired after the 2018 season but quickly left when the NFL opportunity became available.
Rutgers finished the 2018 season 1-11.
