One of the best-known traditions in college football is the Nebraska Blackshirts, which is the nickname for the Huskers’ defensive unit. Originally two words, the tradition dates back to Bob Devaney’s third season as coach and comes from the black, pullover contrasting jerseys worn by the defensive during practice.

On Monday the Nebraska defense handed out the jerseys to a group of Huskers that earned their right to them during preseason camp.

Some Huskers alumni were on hand to distribute the honor, with Cam Taylor-Britt receiving his black jersey from new athletic director Trev Alberts, while safety Marquel Dismuke got his from Kenny Wilhite.

Other players that received Blackshirts on Monday: Defensive linemen Ben Stille, Ty Robinson, Deontre Thomas and Damion Daniels, safety Deontai Williams, outside linebackers JoJo Domann, Garrett Nelson and Caleb Tannor and inside linebackers Nick Henrich and Luke Reimer.

The Nebraska Football twitter account released a video of the ceremony on Monday.

The Huskers open play this weekend when they travel to Champaign to take on Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 28.
