It is not uncommon for football teams to handout rings to players for certain wins or occasions, but this Virginia Tech ring came after a lackluster season.

The Hokies had a very forgettable 2018 campaign, finishing with a 6-6 record during the regular season. The lowest point came when Virginia Tech lost to Conference USA foe Old Dominion by two touchdowns in September.

VT did secure a bowl bid and wound up playing in the Military Bowl against Cincinnati. Unfortunately, the Hokies lost that bowl 35-31, sending them to a sub-.500 season at 6-7.

Such a season record is rather unimpressive, but it appears Hokies players were rewarded with a ring anyways. The reason? It appears to be for keeping the Hokies’ bowl streak alive:

Virginia Tech secured a bowl bid for a 26th straight season last year with late wins over Virginia and Marshall. Hey, a ring is a ring. Right?
