Illinois’ offseason has been a rollercoaster on the transfer front, but Lovie Smith received some good news over the weekend.

On Sunday, former Richmond wide receiver Dejon Brissett announced that he was committing to the Illini as a graduate transfer. He made his decision public via Instagram.

“Biggest decision I’ve ever made in my life,” Brissett wrote. “And proud to say that next year I will continue to play and study at the University of Illinois. Thank you to everyone who’s been there in this process, I will always be a Spider!”

Brissett brings some much needed depth and talent to the Illini at the wide receiver position. Illinois appeared to be in a good situation earlier this offseason, receiving commitments from Miami’s Jeff Thomas and Oklahoma’s A.D. Miller through transfer. Both players eventually decided to return to their respective schools, however.

As a junior in 2017, Brissett was an All-Colonial Athletic Association Conference first-team selection. He totaled 63 receptions for 896 yards and seven touchdowns. Last year, the receiver played in just three games before suffering a fracture in his foot that cut his season short.

He had 16 catches for 299 yards and a touchdown.

Brissett will be immediately eligible to play for the Illini in 2019 as a graduate transfer and will likely carve out a significant role for himself in the offense.
