Indiana’s success on the recruiting trail continued on Monday afternoon.

The Hoosiers received a verbal commitment from 4-star running back Gi’Bran Payne, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound ball carrier received 18 offers on the recruiting front. He picked the Hoosiers over Power 5 offers from Iowa, Kentucky, Louisville, Minnesota, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Purdue, Tennessee, Wisconsin and others.

Payne is ranked as one of the Top 250 overall prospects in the class, per 247Sports Composite. He comes in as the No. 24 running back of the cycle and is a Top 10 player from Ohio.

Due to an ankle injury, Payne missed much of the 2020 season. In 2019, he scored 13 total touchdowns and rushed for 790 yards on 77 carries for LaSalle. He also missed three games that year.

From 247Sports recruiting analyst Allen Trieu:

One cut and go back with good acceleration and has shown he can hit the home run against good competition. Would not classify as a big back, but is compact with a good muscle base as he heads into college. Prefers to hit the crease and go but when he needs to get creative, he shows some elusiveness and wiggle. Solid pass catcher. Can still get faster in the top end. Has dealt with some injuries and also has split carries at other times in his career so there is less to go on with him than with other highly ranked national running back prospects.

Indiana is now up to 14 verbal commitments with its 2022 class. The Hoosiers have four pledges from 4-star players in the cycle.
