It’s been a huge week for Iowa tight ends, past and present.

On Thursday, T.J. Hockenson was named the winner of the John Mackey Award, presented to the best tight end in college football. He became the second Hawkeye to claim the award.

A few days later, former Iowa tight end George Kittle set a San Francisco 49ers franchise record. During the Niners game against Denver on Sunday afternoon, Kittle passed Vernon Davis for most receiving yards in a single season by a tight end.

Entering Sunday’s game, Kittle had 893 yards and three touchdowns on 62 receptions. In the first half against the Broncos, the tight end had 210 yards and a touchdown on seven catches.

This is just Kittle’s second season in the NFL.

Iowa has long been known for producing professional-level talent at the tight end position. This week has been a pretty good example of that.
