When Iowa needed big plays late in Friday’s game against Cincinnati, it was none other than Jordan Bohannon who made them.

Iowa found itself down 13 points early in the first half and took a 36-31 deficit into the locker room, but the Hawkeyes heated up in the final 20 minutes, including the star guard. Bohannon scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half, including six in the final four minutes to help lift Iowa to a 79-72 win the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Friday marked the first time the Hawkeyes have won a game in the tournament since 2016.

The Hawkeyes were led in scoring by Luka Garza, who posted a game-high 20 points in the victory. Joe Wieskamp had 19 points and Nick Baer pitched in with 10 off the bench.

Despite the sluggish start, Iowa ended up shooting 54.7 percent from the floor and made 11-of-22 three-point attempts. That hot shooting countered 14 turnovers for Iowa, double Cincinnati’s total.

With the win, Iowa advances to the Round of 32, where it will play the winner of No. 2 Tennessee and No. 15 Colgate. The Hawkeyes will have a chance to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time under head coach Fran McCaffery. The last time Iowa reached the second weekend came in 1999.

Iowa’s win over Cincinnati was also significant for the B1G, which is now 6-0 in the NCAA Tournament. No. 5 Wisconsin will play No. 12 Oregon and No. 11 Ohio State will battle No. 6 Iowa State in an attempt to lift the conference to a perfect 6-0 record.

The Hawkeyes were more than happy to do their part.
