It looks like Ty Johnson is going to get an opportunity to play more as a rookie in the NFL.

Johnson was a sixth-round pick of the Detroit Lions in the 2019 NFL Draft, and the Lions may be gearing up to get him on the field in a bigger role this season. Running back C.J. Anderson was released by the team early in the week, and that opens up an opportunity for Johnson.

While the Lions did add Paul Perkins to replace Anderson, he still needs to get up to speed with the offense. And while Detroit likes starter Kerryon Johnson a lot, Ty Johnson brings a nice skillset to the table.

According to Kyle Meinke with MLive.com, Lions quarterback Matt Stafford is also liking what he’s seeing out of the rookie from Maryland:

“It was good for him to get in there,” quarterback Matthew Stafford said. “I was happy for him. I thought he ran the ball well. He’s an explosive kid, strong, fast, physical, young guy trying to do right. Still has a lot to learn, as we all do, but I was happy for him.”

Hopefully, Johnson continues to impress and carve out a role in the NFL. He finished his Terrapins career with 2,635 rushing yards.
