Maryland still quiet on four-man QB battle
It’s still a mystery.
Nobody has been able to crack Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin, or anyone associated with the Terrapins, about the quarterback situation. All we know is that it’s still a four-man race.
Durkin, who spoke to the media on Wednesday, didn’t shed any light on the battle for the No. 1 spot. And other players and coaches remained pretty tight-lipped, as well.
The four players in the hunt for that starting role are Caleb Henderson, Max Bortenschlager, incoming freshman Kasim Hill and returning starter Tyrrell Pigrome.

When asked about the quarterback situation by the Washington Post, Durkin had this to say:
We really haven’t had any scrimmages or anything like that, but we’re still just going with what our plan was going into camp in terms of dividing up the reps and keeping it even, how many reps they’re getting, how many reps you’re getting with the ones or the twos, or what it might be
And after we get through our first big scrimmage this weekend, I think we’ll start to probably adjust and alter what those reps are. I don’t have a set date, day or time when we want to make some sort of decision. I want it to sort itself out on the field and let the players decide.
With only a few weeks left until the season, someone better start separating himself from the pack.
Pigrome started in one game for the Terrapins last fall, but made an appearance in 11 games. He was a great dual-threat option and was inserted in certain situations throughout the 2016 campaign. He completed 37-of-71 passes for 322 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He added 254 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
Henderson is perceived as having the biggest arm of the bunch and will likely be the best option to stretch the field vertically, something Durkin would like to add to his offense. Hill, the four-star, highly-touted incoming freshman, is another dual-threat guy.
Bortenschlager is the wildcard in the four-man race.
Having four quarterbacks competing for the starting role is a good problem to have, especially considering Maryland’s struggles at the position the past two seasons.
It’ll be interesting to see if Durkin sticks with just one guy all year long.
