A typical press conference scheduled for Jim Harbaugh to meet with the media turned into somewhat of a bad news day for Michigan.

Wednesday, Harbaugh spoke with reporters to provide updates on spring practice, but a lot of the talk circled around the injury status of several players. And for a few key guys — defensive tackle Michael Dwumfour and wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones — there is a bit of harsh reality with their status.

Harbaugh told reporters that injuries to Dwumfour and Peoples-Jones are “more serious than previously thought,” according to Angelique Chengelis of the Detroit News. Both players have been sidelined through spring practice.

As if that news wasn’t bad enough, Harbaugh acknowledged that the injuries to both players could prevent them from seeing the field in 2019, though that’s obviously unknown at this time. Dwumfour and Peoples-Jones are both suffering from soft tissue injuries but neither will have to undergo surgery.

Peoples-Jones was Michigan’s second-leading receiver last year behind Nico Collins and is one of the biggest playmakers on the offense and in special teams. He totaled 612 yards and eight touchdowns on 41 catches last year. Peoples-Jones also fielded 25 punts for 250 yards and a score.

Dwumfour is expected to have a more prominent role along the defensive line this season with Rashan Gary and Chase Winovich departing. The lineman totaled 22 stops and three sacks for the Wolverines in 2018.

Harbaugh also updated the status of Nico Collins, Lavert Hill and Christian Turner, all of which seem to be in a better position to return than Peoples-Jones and Dwumfour.
