Moments after Adam Scheffer’s report surfaced on Monday about Jabrill Peppers testing positive for a dilute sample at the NFL combine, there was a strong reaction.

On “ESPN’s Russillo and Kanell,” Danny Kanell didn’t hold back his opinions on the Peppers news. Kanell assumed that Peppers’ dilute test was him trying to mask marijuana use.

“This is not good. This kid drives me insane,” Kanell said on Russillo and Kanell. “Now, I wonder how long before his agent coaches him up on what to say. Can he use the same excuse that Rueben Foster used and come out and say, ‘Hey, I was sick. I was trying to hydrate. I was taking a lot of Gatorade so that’s why I came up with this test.’ I guarantee you there will be some excuse.

“I cannot understand how guys can be this dumb where they can’t stay out of trouble in the most important job interview of your life. You know exactly when the combine is gonna be. All you have to do is stop smoking leading up to it for a month, two months. Just put it down for a little while so you avoid any sort of these types of complications.

“Guess what’s gonna happen now to (Foster and Peppers)? They’re going to be in the program for the NFL, which makes your life miserable. It’s entirely easy to go through the NFL. You can smoke all the weed you want, as long as you’re smart about it.

“But if you’re dumb, you’re going to get busted, you’re going to get suspended games and potentially even the entire season like (former Nebraska player) Randy Gregory.”

The NFL treats positive tests for dilute samples the same as failed drug tests. For what it’s worth, Peppers’ agency, CAA, got out ahead of the news and had a statement about the positive test.

“Peppers went to the combine, the statement read. “He was sick after flying there from San Diego. He has a history of cramping. Peppers was being pumped with fluids, drinking 8-10 bottles of water before he went to bed, because he was the first guy to work out two days for the LBs and DBs. He had to go through that first day, come back on second day, and that was the fear. So Peppers was pounding water and under the weather. He never failed a drug test in his life, nor tested positive before for any substance.”

It’s unknown how much Peppers’ positive test or how the public criticism will impact his draft stock this weekend.
