Michigan offensive analyst Tanner Engstrand is leaving Ann Arbor to join Pep Hamilton’s XFL staff in Washington D.C.

The XFL’s Washington D.C. franchise tweeted out Wednesday afternoon that Engstrand will be the team’s offensive coordinator. Hamilton accepted the position as head coach earlier this year. The two worked together on Jim Harbaugh’s staff in Ann Arbor.

Engstrand joined Michigan in February 2018, taking on a role as an offensive analyst. He had previously served as an offensive coordinator at the University of San Diego. He held that position for four years before landing with the Wolverines.

Engrstrand got his start in coaching at the University of San Diego, where he served as a graduate assistant on Harbaugh’s staff during the 2005 season.

Hamilton was the assistant head coach and passing game coordinator at Michigan in 2017 and 2018 before taking the job in the XFL. It will be his first head coaching gig at any level. He will also serve as the general manager of the franchise.

The XFL is expected to kick off its first season in 2020.
