Michigan bolstered its 2018 recruiting class by keeping a homegrown prospect in his home state.

On Tuesday night, Jalen Mayfield, a four-star offensive tackle from Grand Rapids, Mich., announced he would be committing to Michigan. He chose the Wolverines over seven other B1G programs, including Michigan State, Nebraska and Minnesota.

He made the announcement at a school function that was recorded through Periscope.

Mayfield becomes the ninth recruit in Jim Harbaugh’s 2018 class, which was ranked 17th nationally and sixth in the B1G prior to the commitment. He is the sixth prospect with a four-star rating.

Mayfield originally committed to Minnesota back in February, but decomitted from P.J. Fleck and the Gophers after receiving an offer from Michigan. Since that time, he’s taken multiple visits and has received a few other major offers.

When he made his decision, he held offers from 16 programs.
