Michigan hasn’t had more than three players selected in the NFL draft since 2008.

It’s safe to say that streak will end in 2017. It could even end by the time the first round concludes.

Michigan offensive lineman Erik Magnuson already came out and said that he thought the Wolverines should top Ohio State’s 12 draftees from 2016. Apparently he’s not alone in giving high praise to Michigan’s draft prospects.

NFL.com analyst Chad Reuter ranked the programs with the most talent in this year’s draft. Michigan — not Alabama or Clemson — topped the list. He ranked the Wolverines ahead of the likes of Alabama, LSU, Clemson and Ohio State in his top five.

Here was why Reuter gave Michigan the No. 1 spot:

These players were already in Ann Arbor when Jim Harbaugh arrived, and it’s likely that they met their potential under the current coaching staff’s tutelage. Ohio State had 12 players drafted last year, but Michigan might one-up its rival this year if most of the players listed below are selected. TE Jake Butt and WR Amara Darboh could easily be second-round picks, but might end up as outstanding pickups in the third round.

Amazingly enough, Michigan might only have one underclassman among its possible 16 selections that Reuter listed. Mel Kiper Jr. has that lone underclassman, Jabrill Peppers, as his first Wolverine off the board.

Reuter projected Peppers, Taco Charlton,  Jourdan Lewis and Chris Wormley among the early-round (1-2) selections. He put Jake Butt, Magnuson, Amara Darboh, and De’Veon Smith as middle-round picks (3-4) and he listed eight different Wolverines among his late-round picks (5-7).

To be fair, Reuter didn’t say that Michigan had more early-round talent than Alabama. He had eight Crimson Tide players projected as early-round selections, but only two as middle-round picks and no late-round picks.

Will Michigan put a dozen players in the draft? The Wolverines haven’t put more than seven players in the draft since it was reduced to seven rounds.

It isn’t a guarantee, but Michigan is looking like it’ll have a historic draft in 2017.
