After starting under center for Michigan a year ago and deciding to pass on the NFL Draft to return to Ann Arbor for one more year, there’s really no doubt that Shea Patterson will be the starting quarterback this fall.

But head coach Jim Harbaugh says the competition is far from decided, and Patterson has some serious competition at the position. So much so, that Patterson can’t “put his feet up.”

Harbaugh met with the media on Monday and discussed the quarterback situation at Michigan, and gave a quick rundown of the depth chart. Patterson is still at the top spot, followed by Dylan McCaffrey and Joe Milton.

“They’re all getting equal reps and they’re all looking good,” Harbaugh said. “It’s a really good, talented quarterback room.

“There’s no possible way that Shea Patterson will be able to put his feet up, in my opinion. He’s got serious competition there with Dylan and Joe right now. Should it’ll be a fun spring.”

Patterson threw for 2,600 yards and 22 touchdowns while completing nearly 65 percent of his passes last year. The Wolverines finished the year 10-3.

Both McCaffrey and Milton saw limited action last year, as well. McCaffrey appeared in six games for Michigan, throwing for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Milton played in four games for 58 yards. They are both former four-star prospects.

Patterson will be the favorite to land the position, and it’s going to be really hard to dethrone the incumbent from his position. But Harbaugh makes it sound like the quarterback situation is in good shape at Michigan with plenty of depth.

That’s never a bad problem.
