Less than a week after signing with the New York Giants, Brian Lewerke already has his first touchdown as a member of the G-men.

Getting some extended run in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Browns, Lewerke earned his first throwing TD as a member of the Giants as he completed a throw to David Sills V to cut into the Cleveland lead during New York’s second preseason game of the 2021 season.

Lewerke was part of the 2020 NFL Draft class but was not selected in the seven-round draft after his time in East Lansing. He spent some time with New England but did not appear in any games.

Heading into the 2021 season, Lewerke was not a member of an NFL roster. However, the quarterback room for the Giants was shaken up recently with the injury to backup quarterback Clayton Thorson, a former Northwestern QB. That led to the signing of Lewerke.

To make room for Lewerke, Thorson was released by the Giants. Though New York also has journeyman quarterback Mike Glennon on its roster, Lewerke certainly appears to be in the mix to be the backup to Daniel Jones.

Lewerke threw for more than 8,000 yards in four seasons with the Spartans and threw for 47 touchdowns. He has yet to get any playing time during a regular-season NFL game.
