Michigan State does not have a huge hole to plug at running back heading into the 2018 season, which perhaps makes it unsurprising that redshirt sophomore Austin Andrews has decided to transfer.

Andrews, who came to East Lansing as a three-star defensive back but was recently transitioned to running back during spring practice, announced his intention to leave Michigan State on Twitter. He posted a heart-felt message as well as a letter from MSU stating that other schools are free to talk to him.

It’s recruiting season again for the former St. Francis DeSales High School (Columbus, Ohio), standout, though it does appear that he’ll cherish his time with the Spartans.

“After much thought and prayer about my future, I’ve decided to transfer from Michigan State University,” he wrote. “I truly want to say thank you for all those who’ve been there for me and helped me get this far. East Lansing is an amazing place with a lot of great people, coaching staff, teammates, faculty, and fans. I’m looking forward to the next chapter of my life and goals. Ready to make the most of my opportunity!”

Andrews likely saw the writing on the wall after being transferred to running back in the spring. A former cornerback, he entered the running back room looking up to a stellar senior in LJ Scott — who rushed for 898 yards and eight touchdowns last season — sophomore Connor Heyward, redshirt freshman Weston Bridges, and two true freshman in La’Darius Jefferson and Elijah Collins.
