Michigan State defensive line coaches Ron Burton and Chuck Bullough have been named this year’s Defensive Line Coaches of the Year by FootballScoop.
This year’s winners were selected by prior recipients of the title. FootballScoop made the announcement Wednesday.
The Spartans didn’t enjoy a great year, finishing with a 7-6 record. Entering the season, Michigan State was expected to compete for a B1G title and potentially a spot in the College Football Playoff. Injuries and poor offensive production hampered those plans.
What Michigan State did do well this season was dominated the trenches on the defensive side of the football. It owned the best run defense in the nation, allowing just 81.3 yards per game and 2.7 yards per carry.
Seven Michigan State opponents were held under 65 rushing yards this season and four teams were held to season-low rushing totals when playing the Spartans.
In addition to those tremendous numbers, Michigan State registered 79 tackles for loss and 25 sacks this season.
