One of the top big men in the B1G is expected to return to the court this week.
Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo told reporters on Monday that he expects Nick Ward to play in the B1G Tournament this week after missing the past few weeks with a hand injury. The Spartans have earned a double-bye and won’t play until Friday.
“I do expect Nick to play. How much, I don’t know,” Izzo said. “[I’m] 99 percent sure he plays unless there’s a setback.”
Ward has missed the last five games for Michigan State. Before suffering a hairline fracture in his hand against Ohio State, Ward was averaging 15.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Without him on the floor, Michigan State was still able to capture a B1G regular season title, despite a severe lack of depth.
Though Ward may not be at full strength and will have to kick off some of the rust, his return gives Michigan State some much-needed depth and another body in the post. it’s important for the Spartans as they make a push for a conference tournament title and NCAA title.
Michigan State will play the winner of Thursday’s Indiana-Ohio State game on Friday. The Spartans are the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
