Whenever you start a conversation about Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck, the word “energy” always comes up. It’s impossible not to notice his enthusiasm and passion for football and his team.

But is it really energy that makes him a good football coach?

Recently, GoMN.com spoke with Mike Nolan, Fleck’s coach while he was with the 49ers in 2004 and 2005. And while he had plenty of great things to say about the former receiver, that “energy” word popped up again.

Here are a few snippets from Nolan talking about Fleck:

He had a unique way about him with all of his teammates. Football is more about people than X’s and O’s. He was hard-working, dedicated, disciplined, great communicator, not afraid to be himself or let people know who he was.

I would have loved for my children to have a coach like P.J. while growing up. Sean Payton said to me this morning, when speaking about his son, how good it makes Sean to feel to have his son coached by people that he feels he not only connects with, but helps him grow as a man with work ethic and proper values.

When he was asked if Fleck’s energy as a coach was there during his playing career, Nolan confirmed.

“Yes,” Nolan said. “It was not only unique, but more importantly it is sincere and authentic.”

What you see from Fleck isn’t something he’s doing for the cameras or an attempt to get attention. At least not according to Nolan.

Nolan had a few good stories about Fleck and also talked about his character throughout the interview. To see all of his statements, you can visit the article here.
