Close win, close win, close win.

That’s how you would define Minnesota’s season so far after three games. The Golden Gophers have found themselves trailing in the fourth quarter of each of their first three contests this season, but have found ways to put three tallies in the win column. It hasn’t been pretty, but Minnesota is still perfect.

During his weekly appearance on Big Ten Network, Urban Meyer talked a little bit about Minnesota’s close calls through three weeks. Even if those wins haven’t come against the best opponents, the former head coach is impressed with how P.J. Fleck and company have found ways to come out on top.

“That team’s got a little bit of the it factor, they’re never going to stop swinging, not stop playing. That’s a credit to the coach, but it’s really a credit — they have something on that team, obviously I don’t know them well enough yet, that’s really impressive. I mean, there are times it looks like it’s over and they come back and win.”

Following another tight victory against Georgia Southern, Fleck muttered the same sentiment in the postgame press conference. He admitted the wins weren’t pretty, but also said “there’s something to be said for how we’re winning.”

There’s certainly no denying that.

Minnesota now enters an off week — one that comes at a perfect time following three nail-biting victories. Then, next week, the Gophers travel to West Lafayette to kick off the B1G season against Purdue.

Maybe a little rest will help Minnesota put a little cushion between it and Purdue next Saturday without the fourth quarter fireworks.
