After practice the Friday before Nebraska hosted Michigan, Huskers tight end and co-captain Austin Allen received some good news.

An announcement was made before the team that Allen had been honored as the recipient of the Brook Berringer Memorial Scholarship, for displaying many of the same qualities both inside and outside the community as Berringer had.

Among the criteria considered to earn the scholarship includes involvement in community service along with high ideals, excellent character and integrity. Berringer was a member of the 1994 and 1995 national championship teams at Nebraska, before he was killed in a plane crash on April 18, 1996.

Allen’s family, along with representatives of the Berringer family were on hand during a ceremony at halftime of the game with Michigan, with Allen’s parents receiving a plaque from Berringer’s mother, Jan.

During Nebraska’s 32-29 loss to Michigan that night, Allen had two receptions for 59 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown catch.
