Devine Ozigbo has been on a tear over the last several weeks. His outstanding performances haven’t always translated to wins for Nebraska, but he’s certainly been a bright spot for the program this season.

Saturday was another big day for the senior running back. Ozigbo racked up 162 yards and three touchdowns in Nebraska’s 54-35 victory over Illinois. It was the fifth time this season he’s eclipsed the 100-yard mark.

Head coach Scott Frost had plenty of praise for his star running back during his weekly press conference on Monday.

“He’s an example of how kids should be and what they should do,” Frost said.

To start the season, Ozigbo wasn’t the starting running back for the Huskers. With several other players transferring from the program — some because of playing time — the running back could’ve made the same decision.

Instead, Ozigbo opted to stick it out in Lincoln. And he’s reaped the benefits of that decision.

“He just kept coming to work, doing his job, getting better,” Frost said. “It’s even more special when someone has a great season when they persevere through something like that. What a great teammate and great person. I really believe he’s putting himself in position to keep playing football and not have his Nebraska career be the end of his career.”

Ozigbo has rushed for 958 yards and 12 touchdowns this season, averaging 7.5 yards per carry. He’s hit the century mark in five of the last seven games and has averaged more than 10 yards per carry on four occasions.

While the Huskers won’t be going bowling this season, Ozigbo still has two games to leave his mark. With games against Michigan State and Iowa still remaining, Nebraska will be hungry to notch a signature win.

Feeding Ozigbo each of the next two weeks seems like a safe way to cure that hunger.
