There’s a very good chance that Northwestern makes program history on Thursday night, the first day of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Heading into this year’s event, two Wildcats are projected to be first-round selections in the NFL Draft. Offensive lineman Rashawn Slater and cornerback Greg Newsome II are both listed as Day 1 picks according to multiple mock drafts.

In the latest complete, 7-round mock draft from CBS Sports, Slater is tabbed as the No. 11 pick in this year’s draft — the No. 2 player picked out of the B1G behind Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Newsome is projected to be the No. 23 selection.

Mel Kiper Jr. recently has Slater picked to be the No. 13 player off the board on Thursday night while Newsome is still locked into that No. 23 spot.

Despite opting out of the 2020, Slater hasn’t lost any footing as one of the top offensive line prospects in this year’s NFL Draft. He’s catapulted up some draft boards since the end of the season.

Newsome was able to seriously improve his draft stock by posting a big year defensively for the Wildcats. He’s considered to be one of the best lockdown cornerbacks in this year’s draft class.

We’ll find out on Thursday night if Northwestern sees two players selected in the first round of the same NFL Draft for the first time in program history.
