Northwestern received some tough news before the Memorial Day weekend.

According to reports, Wildcats receiver Solomon Vault will miss the 2017 season following a surgery for a lower-body injury. Vault is expected to redshirt this year and will be eligible for the 2018 campaign.

InsideNU.com was first to report the news.

This is a substantial loss for Northwestern, who is looking for candidates to replace Austin Carr at receiver. Last year, Vault appeared in all 13 games, catching 15 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns.

Vault was also an important special teams piece last season. He accounted for 560 yards and a score on 23 kickoff returns.

Northwestern will still have Flynn Nagel and Macan Wilson as playmakers at receiver, but the injury to Vault certainly limits the Wildcats’ depth at the position.
