Longtime Northwestern offensive line coach Adam Cushing will reportedly become the next head coach at Eastern Illinois.

Sunday night, Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune reported that Cushing will be leaving Evanston to take over the vacancy at Eastern Illinois. He had been with the Wildcats since the 2002 season.

“My years at Northwestern were incredible,” Cushing told the Chicago Tribune. “But this is an opportunity at a power FCS job, not a casual FCS job. There is a ton of football tradition, lots of Super Bowl rings and lot of potential. And the roster’s not bad.”

Cushing has wanted the opportunity to run his own program and now he’ll get that shot. He will coach the Wildcats through the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 29. Cushing will start at Eastern Illinois on Jan. 2.

Northwestern was 8-5 this season, winning the West Division and appearing in the B1G Championship Game. The Wildcats will play Utah in the Holiday Bowl.
