Abdul Carter has been sidelined with an apparent injury to his left arm.

The injury happened at some point during the first half of Penn State’s Fiesta Bowl contest against Boise State. He was taken into the medical tent for evaluation and then did not re-enter the game in the first half.

Carter was later seen working on a bike on the sideline:

Fans and media at the Fiesta Bowl noted that Carter did not have possession of his helmet while he was out, which could be a sign that he’s not coming back into the game:

If Carter can’t return, it would be a big blow to Boise State’s defense. When healthy, he’s one of the most disruptive defensive players in the entire country. He recorded a Big Ten-best 22 tackles for loss and 11 sacks ahead of this game against the Broncos.

Carter’s presence (or absence) would also have an out-sized impact on Penn State’s chances to advance beyond the semifinals of the College Football Playoff, should the Nittany Lions be able to beat Boise on Tuesday night.

Penn State took a 17-7 lead into the halftime break against Boise State on Tuesday.
