Penn State will be without the services of defensive tackled Fred Hansard for the remainder of the season, James Franklin said on Tuesday.

Hansard was injured in Penn State’s game against Michigan State on Saturday and was carted off the field. Franklin said the defensive lineman underwent surgery and will miss the remainder of the 2018 campaign.

The injury occurred in second quarter of Saturday’s matchup and appeared to be an issue with his left leg. Franklin didn’t get into the details of Hansard’s injury.

Hansard has served as a backup to Robert Windsor and Kevin Givens this season, recording two tackles and half a tackle for loss. He’s appeared in all six games for the Nittany Lions this fall.

Though Hansard hasn’t provided much production from a statistical standpoint, Penn State has been dealing with depth issues along its defensive front all year.

Penn State is entering a difficult stretch on its schedule. This week, the Nittany Lions travel to Bloomington to take on Indiana. Then, games against No. 19 Iowa (5-1), No. 6 Michigan (6-1) and No. 23 Wisconsin (4-2) will present huge challenges for Franklin’s defense.

Finding answers to the depth concerns will be huge for Penn State in the coming weeks.
