Penn State freshman tight end Mega Barnwell has left the program, according to a report.

That move, first confirmed by Onward State, comes just a few months after Barnwell enrolled at Penn State. He arrived in Happy Valley back in January and went through spring practice with the team.

Barnwell was a big addition for the Nittany Lions in the 2023 recruiting class. He was a 4-star prospect who was expected to bring positional versatility and athleticism. He’s listed at 6-foot-6, 250 pounds.

He was the No. 415 overall player and the No. 23 athlete in the country for the class of 2023, per 247Sports rankings. He was also the No. 10 prospect from the state of Virginia.

Barnwell was a longterm commitment to Penn State. He originally chose the Nittany Lions back in September of 2021 — more than 2 full years before he was able to officially sign with the program.

His departure means Penn State is down to 22 commitments from the class of 2023. A total of 19 players — including Barnwell — from the class have already enrolled. Penn State’s class sits at No. 14 nationally, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

Because Barnwell is not a graduate transfer, he’s unable to enter the portal outside of the NCAA’s designated transfer windows. The next time he can enter the portal is following the 2023 regular season.
