Penn State may soon be on the market for a new offensive coordinator.

On Monday, Zach Barnett of FootballScoop.com reported that Penn State offensive coordinator Ricky Rahne is expected to be the next head coach at Old Dominion. Later, Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reported similar news.

Rahne, 39, has spent most of his coaching career on James Franklin’s staff at Vanderbilt and Penn State. He’s worked under Franklin since 2011. The news comes as somewhat as a surprise, as Rahne has often downplayed his interest in becoming a head coach.

Rahne first teamed up with Franklin in 2011 in Nashville, becoming the quarterbacks coach at Vanderbilt. He stayed in that role for three seasons, before Franklin and his staff moved to Penn State.

In State College, Rahne started out as the quarterbacks coach, a position he coached from 2014-15. In 2016 and 2017, Rahne was the team’s tight ends coach. In 2018, after offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead left, Rahne was thrust into the OC position and took back over as quarterbacks coach, as well.

This year marked his second season in that role.

Rahne will be replacing Bobby Wilder, who stepped down after a 1-11 season with the Monarchs. He was the head coach at Old Dominion for 11 season, compiling a 77-56 record.
