Throughout most of the summer months, Greg Schiano has done an excellent job on the recruiting trail. The business doesn’t come without at least some heartbreak, though, and Rutgers saw one of its verbal pledges decommit on Wednesday.

New Jersey native and 3-star wide receiver Jojo Bermudez announced on Twitter that he is reopening his recruitment. He initially committed to the Scarlet Knights in November 2020.

“I feel it is best for me to open recruiting back up so I can make 100% sure I’m making the best decision for myself, my family and my future,” Bermudez wrote on Twitter. “Even though I love what is going on at Rutgers, I don’t want to have any regrets about my decision and in my heart I feel like I should allow myself to at least consider other possibilities for my future.”

Bermudez is listed as a 5-foot-10, 165-pound receiver out of Egg Harbor City. He ranks as the No. 16 prospect out of New Jersey and the No. 110 wide receiver of the 2022 class.

Seven other schools have offered Bermudez, including Central Michigan, UConn, UMass, Syracuse, Tennessee, Princeton and Yale.

When Bermudez initially made his decision the NCAA was in the middle of a recruiting dead period because of the pandemic. Visits, official and unofficial, were not permitted.

Now that visits have opened back up, Bermudez can make trips to campuses before making a decision. It sounds like Rutgers is still in play for the in-state receiver, but he wants to evaluate all options.
