Wisconsin had chances to win, but ultimately fell to Penn State 16-10 on Saturday afternoon.

The Badgers turned it over too many times to keep up with Penn State’s offensive surge in the second half. The Nittany Lions scored all 16 of their points after the break and looked much more comfortable as they settled into the game.

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst addressed those missed opportunities with the media in Madison after the game.

“The season did not start the way you’d want it to, as far as winning the game,” Chryst said. “And yet, to win you’ve got to give yourself a chance to be in that position. And I thought many did. But we gotta find a way to finish.”

Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz threw two interceptions in the red zone in the game’s final minutes. Just two plays before the game-sealing INT, Mertz overthrew a receiver in the end zone.

Chryst discussed Mertz’s reads after the game:

“The obvious thing is that, as space gets condensed, you’re going to have some smaller windows,” Chryst said. “At the end there, a lot of teams will bring pressure down there so it’s a little bit different.”

Chryst was also asked about a bright spot in the game for Wisconsin: Running back Chez Mellusi, who rushed for 121 yards and 1 touchdown. He also caught two passes for eight yards.
