Wisconsin’s defense dismantled Maryland during a 23-10 win in a B1G crossover game in windy and rainy conditions at Camp Randall Stadium.

The Badgers’ defense, led by senior nose tackle Keeanu Benton and senior outside linebacker Nick Herbig, held Maryland to 189 total yards.

Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who missed one game with a knee injury, completed 10 of 23 passes for 77 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

Wisconsin safety Hunter Wohler picked off Tagovailoa on the Terrapins’ first series in the fourth quarter. Wohler returned the interception 9 yards to Maryland’s 19-yard line.

The Badgers (5-4, 2-3 B1G) have won 2 in a row and snapped the Terrapins’ 2-game winning streak.

Wisconsin struck first as running back Braelon Allen posted a 9-yard touchdown run with 1 minute, 21 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The Badgers extended their lead to 14-0 in the second quarter on an 89-yard touchdown run by Isaac Guerendo, who broke free from a defender and ran down the sideline. Riley Mailman, Chimere Dike and Skyler Bell had critical blocks during Guerendo’s dash.

Guerendo, a senior running back, has scored a career-high 5 touchdowns this season. Guerendo collected a career-high 111 rushing yards on 11 carries against Maryland.

Braelon Allen paces the Badgers with 23 rushes for 119 yards and 1 touchdown. He surpassed 100 yards for the 6th time this season.

Wisconsin senior Chase Wolf came in at quarterback with 31 seconds left in the first half to handle a third-down snap. Graham Mertz exited the game after being sacked.

The Badgers took a 17-0 lead into halftime, following a 28-yard field goal by Nate Van Zelst.

Tagovailoa came into Saturday with a completion rate of 72.5 percent, for a 285.9 yards per game average, with 13 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.

The Terrapins (6-3, 3-3) entered the game allowing only 3.4 yards per carry and 120.0 rushing yards per game. The Badgers finished with 6.9 yards per carry and 211 rushing yards.

Maryland posted its first points in the third quarter on a 39-yard field goal by senior kicker Chad Ryland.

Herbig returned after sitting 1 game with a knee injury. Herbig, who entered the Maryland game as the B1G leader with 6 sacks, increased that total to 8 sacks. Herbig sacked Tagovailoa twice.

Wohler had missed 6 straight after sustaining a left leg injury on Sept. 3 in the Badgers’ season opener against Illinois State.

The Badgers entered with an 80.0 percent success rate (21 of 26) in red-zone scoring, which ranked second in the league behind Ohio State. They were 4-of-6 on red-zone opportunities against the Terrapins.

Van Zelst, a walk-on redshirt freshman, made field goals from 38, 35 and 21 yards. He missed a 33-yard attempt in the fourth quarter.
