When you talk about some of college football’s traditional powers, Nebraska has to be in that conversation. The program has claimed five national titles and was a juggernaut during the Tom Osborne era, which stretched from 1973 through 1997.

Those days as a perennial power are long, though. At least according to one ESPN Radio host.

Substituting for Paul Finebaum on Wednesday, Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones bashed traditional powers Nebraska, Notre Dame and Tennessee for their fall from grace recently. And, he also made the bold claim that none of those programs would return to greatness in the future.

Here’s what Jones had to say on the Paul Finebaum Show:

Nebraska used to recruit the entire Midwest. Why? They were the only team in the Midwest that was on television. It was Nebraska and Oklahoma — that was it. So if you were anywhere good from anywhere around the Midwest, you went where? You went to Nebraska. But now you can go to Iowa. Guess what? You could be pretty good in Iowa. You could go to Kansas State and be good. There’s no reason for a kid to truck across the country to go to Nebraska now and so now Nebraska is not as good.

Jones went on to say that the Huskers could have a few good seasons and could even compete for or win a national title in the future, but a return to consistent dominance isn’t going to happen.

Could they win a national championship? Maybe. Could they [have] a year where they contend nationally? Sure. But will they be consistently great like they were for decades? No. … There’s not a ton of talent in Nebraska. … You ever been to Nebraska? It’s just corn and sadness. There’s nothing there.

While the Huskers haven’t competed at the same level it did back in the 198os and 90s, Mike Riley is working on getting the program back to that level.

Nebraska is coming off a nine-win season and is currently in 247 Sports’ top 10 with its 2018 recruiting class.
