If you were justĀ a passerby on Twitter and noticed pictures with grown men wearing wrestling attire while on the job, it’s highly likely that you were very, very confused.

Well, Penn State head coach James Franklin had a reason. And the B1G champion went on ESPN to explain the story behind his staff sporting singlets while in a team meeting earlier this week.

First, if you missed how all this was started – a hype video recorded by Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy preceding a wrestling meet between the No. 1 Cowboys and No. 2 Penn State – you can get the scoop by reading our earlier coverage of it here.

After the Nittany Lions took down Oklahoma State in the meet, Franklin responded to Gundy’s hype video with this photo:

But why did Franklin and his staff think it was necessary to humorously retaliate to Gundy after Penn State won the meet?

Here’s his explanation:

Franklin cited his friendship with Gundy from their days at Maryland as the igniter behind the singlet response. The two had a brief overlap in College Park, both on the Terrapins staff in the 2000 season.

The playful banter caught plenty of attention, but it sounds like Franklin will be seriously considering whether or not his staff partakes in this specific action again. In the interview, Franklin jokingly said that “15, 40-year-olds in wrestling singlets is not a good look.”

Whether it happens again or not, it was certainly an entertaining change during college football’s long offseason.
