Lost in the shuffle of last night’s late Holiday Bowl victory, one of Wisconsin’s top defensive players made a big announcement.

Vince Biegel, who formed a dominant 1-2 outside linebacker punch with Joe Schobert, is coming back to Madison for his senior year.

Biegel said that he received between a third- and fifth-round draft evaluation, which wasn’t good enough for him to forgo his final year of eligibility.

The junior was one of the main reasons the Badgers had the top scoring defense in the country. He racked up 14 tackles for loss, eight sacks and nine quarterback hurries to help Wisconsin to its fifth double-digit win total in its last seven years.

Beigel’s return is key for a defense that will lose the likes of Schobert, and captain Michael Caputo. Biegel will lead a young linebacking core that includes Jack Cichy, team tackles leader T.J. Edwards and Chris Orr, all of whom saw significant time as starters in 2015.

What remains to be seen is whether or not defensive coordinator Dave Aranda will be back in 2016. He’s been linked to the defensive coordinator openings at LSU and USC.

Either way, Biegel’s return means the Badgers will have plenty of experience returning on the defensive side of the ball.
