Iowa has added a little depth to its defensive line heading into the 2019 season, as the program officially announced that graduate transfer Zach VanValkenburg has signed with the Hawkeyes.

VanValkenburg, a 6-foot-4, 266-pound defensive lineman, comes to Iowa from Hillsdale College, a Division II program. Last season, he registered 70 tackles, 14.5 stops for loss and 8.5 sacks. He also forced three fumbles.

For his efforts, VanValkenburg was named the Defensive Lineman of the Year in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. He led his conference in sacks and ranked third in tackles for loss.

As a graduate transfer, VanValkenburg will be immediately eligible to participate for the Hawkeyes. He will have two years of eligibility remaining in his career. VanValkenburg is a native of Hudsonville, Michigan.

Iowa finished the 2018 season with a 9-4 record.
