Maryland’s 2017 recruiting class just got the late boost it needed.

Even better, it came from a homegrown recruit.

On Friday, four-star all-purpose back Anthony McFarland Jr. announced that he picked the Terps over the likes of Alabama and Miami (FL):

The DeMatha Catholic (Md.) product is the No. 2 recruit in the state of Maryland. McFarland is the No. 3 all-purpose back and the No. 100 player overall in the 247sports composite.

He was named an Under Armour All-American but couldn’t play because of a broken fibula he suffered before the start of the 2016 season.

Originally, McFarland was scheduled to announce his commitment on Wednesday. At the time, he was considered a strong Miami (FL) lean.

But after getting an in-home visit from Maryland assistant Aazaar Abdul-Rahim on Tuesday, McFarland postponed his announcement until Friday. Apparently that was exactly what the Terps needed.

The 5-9, 203-pound back gave them five of the top 10 recruits in the state, including fellow four-star Maryland native Deon Jones. McFarland is now the top recruit in Maryland’s 2017 class, which ranks fourth in the B1G and No. 16 overall.
