Michigan’s 2022 recruiting class has taken a hit.
Thursday evening, 4-star defensive tackle Alex VanSumeren announced with a post on social media that he is decommitting from Michigan. The native of Essexville is ranked as the No. 4 player out of the state and was a great local pick up for Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines.
“Although I will always be grateful for the opportunity, I am no longer committed to the University of Michigan,” VanSumeren wrote on Twitter. “My recruitment is open.”

VanSumeren is listed as a 6-foot-3, 285-pound defensive tackle, per 247Sports. He ranks as the No. 16 player at his position and is the No. 223 overall talent in the 2022 recruiting class.
A lot of big-time programs have shown interest in the defensive tackle, receiving eight offers during the recruiting process. With his recruitment now open again, he’ll likely be considering the other seven offers he’s gotten from Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Michigan State, Penn State and Stanford.
With VanSumeren’s decommitment, Michigan is down to five pledges in the 2022 recruiting class. The Wolverines rank No. 10 nationally and No. 3 in the B1G currently.
