P.J. Fleck came to Minnesota in hopes of taking Minnesota’s recruiting to a new level.

Fleck hasn’t signed his first class yet, but he’s already doing things differently. In fact, Fleck and the Gophers found a simple way to take advantage of an NCAA loophole.

The Gophers hosted two camps called “Night Under the Lights” and “Big Man” for prospective football recruits. It’s a pretty general video, but it accomplishes a few things. The main objective looks like it’s just showing what the Minnesota camp experience is like.

It also shows several recruits, though not by name. According to 247sports’ Chris Hummer, several schools called out Minnesota for violating the NCAA rule that states teams cannot post videos of prospective student-athletes for recruiting purposes.

But there’s another NCAA rule that shows why the video, which was tweeted from Fleck’s personal account, is allowed.

“It is permissible to post a photograph or video of a prospective student-athlete taken during the normal course of camp of clinic activities within permissible camp or clinic information and advertisements,” the NCAA rule interpretation reads.

By using the video to promote Minnesota’s camps and nothing else, Fleck and the Gophers were within NCAA guidelines.

It seems like such a basic use of promotion, which makes it surprising that other schools haven’t been doing that for years. Now that the rules have been defined — and the loophole has been discovered — it could only be a matter of time before the NCAA puts the kibosh on it.

But for now, it just looks like another way Fleck’s new-age thinking paid off.
