Urban Meyer will deservedly get a ton of credit for signing the nation’s No. 2 class.

But also worthy of major recognition is Ohio State cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs, who did plenty of the heavy lifting to sign the Buckeyes’ loaded 2017 group.

Rivals.com gave Coombs that praise. The site named the OSU assistant its recruiter of the year for 2017.

Take a look at the Buckeyes’ 2017 group and its not hard to see why Coombs earned the honor. He was instrumental as the lead recruiter in signing the likes of four-star recruits Isaiah Pryor, Amir Riep, Marcus Williamson and Kendall Sheffield.

Coombs also played a key role in recruiting five-star Ohio State early enrollees Jeffrey Okudah and Shaun Wade.

“Ohio State did its best job ever recruiting nationally this year and Coombs was a huge part of that in addition to some key work locally as well,” Rivals.com National Recruiting Analyst Mike Farrell said. “Kids like his enthusiasm and they certainly take notice of what he and the Buckeyes do when it comes to putting players in the NFL.”

Each of the last two years, Ohio State lost three defensive backs early to the NFL. Still, Coombs lined up more 2017 talent at the position than anybody in the country.

But still, Coombs deflected that credit back to Meyer.

“I promise you, the best recruiter on our staff is our head coach,” Coombs told Rivals. “And we have eight other assistant coaches that they grind and they work. The great thing about our place is I know every other guy is working as hard as I am on the recruiting process, and we’re all working it together.”

Coombs was rumored to be a candidate to join Luke Fickell’s staff at Cincinnati. Fortunately for Ohio State, his recruiting and next-level preparation skills aren’t going anywhere.
