Lucky number seven.

That’s how many five-star recruits Ohio State has in its 2017 class. The Buckeyes had six in the previous six classes combined.

The latest five-star recruit to give his pledge to the Buckeyes came on the biggest stage yet.

The No. 7 overall player in the 2017 class, defensive back Jeffrey Okudah, announced his commitment to Ohio State during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday. Okudah rolled with the Buckeyes instead of the likes of Florida State and Oklahoma.

He instantly became the Buckeyes’ highest-rated recruit in their 2017 class. With Okudah’s announcement, Ohio State now has verbal pledges from five defensive back recruits rated four stars or better.

Long considered an Ohio State lean, Okudah’s choice wasn’t surprising, but it was important.

Ohio State now has commitments from the No. 2 (Okudah) and No. 3 (Baron Browning) recruits in the state of Texas. The Buckeyes are hoping to make a late push to land the No. 3 overall player and top Texas recruit, Marvin Wilson.

As it stands, Ohio State still trails No. 1 Alabama in the 247sports class rankings.

With Okudah’s commitment, Ohio State is in better position to become the first B1G school to ever finish with the top-rated class in the 247sports rankings era.
